In an extraordinary recognition of journalistic excellence, Esquire has been awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for “A Death in Alabama.” It is the first Pulitzer in the magazine’s storied 92-year history.
Written by Mark Warren, the piece appeared in the April/May 2024 edition and tells the tragic, deeply human story of Bubba Copeland — a beloved small-town pastor, mayor, and business owner — whose untold secrets were revealed, leading to a heartbreaking loss that shook his community.
The narrative, brought to life by Warren and guided with care by Editorial Director of Special Projects Ryan D’Agostino, offers an unflinching examination of the devastating personal and societal impacts of exposure and judgment. The story explores themes of immediate, even urgent relevance: our evolving norms of gender and sexual difference, the brutal culture wars that have us tearing at one another often without thought or regard, the profound effect of social media on our lives, and the astonishing power of the Internet. Accompanied by evocative photography by Andrew Hetherington, the article reflects Esquire’s tradition of powerful and impactful storytelling.
This prestigious honor highlights Esquire’s vital role in sharing stories that not only inform but also spark meaningful conversations on issues that matter. The Pulitzer recognition also follows another momentous achievement for the magazine, having recently won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, a testament to its unparalleled dedication to quality journalism.
Congratulations to Esquire Editor-in-Chief Michael Sebastian; Mark Warren, author of the story; Editorial Director of Special Projects Ryan D’Agostino, editor of the piece; photographer Andrew Hetherington; Esquire Managing Editor John Kenney, who brought the idea to us; Esquire Executive Editor Brian O’Keefe, who championed the piece; and the entire Esquire team on this well-deserved accolade!
